Late Iron Age or early Roman (AD 1-200) copper alloy stud with sealing wax red champleve enamel. The stud has a circular head with a slightly convex domed front. The front has a raised border encicling a recessed area filled with enamel within which is a raised solid quatrefoil with pointed oval leaves arranged in a cross, the outer points of which join the border. The sides are broadly straight with rounded upper corners and a recessed ring near the base below which is a slightly broader thin lower section below the recess ring. In the centre of the back is the remains of an integral attachment rivet, probably circular, possibly tubular, c. 5.1 mm in diameter and surrounded by iron corrosion. The head is 13.9mm in diameter at the front, 14.6mm at the backentire stud is 10.1mm thick including the rivet and weighs 4.54 grams.
Similar studs with varying designs in enamel on the front are recorded on the PAS database such as HAMP3505, YORYM-907CD1, WAW-E7DCF2 and LIN-AFA033 and from Colchester (Crummy 1983: 118,), paricularly no.3221. The first two have similar recessed rings around the sides while the remainder have straight sides.
