Seal matrix

Unique ID: NMGW-98B732

Object type certainty:

Medieval lead alloy personal seal matrix, probably of 14th century date. The matrix is circular and had a pierced lug on the reverse, now broken. Beneath the lug is a central raised rib, flanked by two U-shaped tendrils, forming a fleur-de-lis motif. The seal die has some damage, and much of the edge has been lost. The central device on the die depicts an eight petalled flower with rounded ends. The surrounding inscription is difficult to discern, but may read: * S’ WALT’ FIL ...PEITH (?) (Seal of Walter, son of ...peith)

Inscription: * S’ WALT’ FIL ...PEITH (?)
