An incomplete copper alloy Colchester type brooch, of Late Iron Age to early Roman date (AD 25 to AD 60).
Approximately 45% of the brooch is present, consisting of the bow, one of the wings, incomplete head, and an incomplete catch plate. The pin and spring are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.
In plan, the brooch would have been almost T-shaped, and sub oval in cross section. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile, with one flat sub rectangular wing projecting from the right side at the top (there would have been another one on the left). An incomplete sub triangular catch plate extends from the reverse of the foot of the bow. The back of the brooch is plain and undecorated. The wing is plain and undecorated. The head of the brooch has two small circular pins protruding out to the sides, presumably this is the remnants of the spring, or of where the spring would sit.
The brooch measures 41.1 mm in length, 12.1 mm wide and 4.7 mm thick. It weighs 5.2 grams.
The brooch is a dark green colour, and has an even surface patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.
Several similar brooches have been recorded on the PAS database including WMID-CD10F2, WMID-3A4702 and WMID-902F02.
