A Medieval copper-alloy single-loop buckle.
The frame is trapezoidal, its rectangular-sectioned sides flaring towards the expanded outer side. A moulded pin rest occupies the centre of this outer side, flanked by two transverse grooves which extend to the underside, where they converge, crossing over at their distal ends. The subrectangular plate has been folded double around the circular-sectioned axis bar; this plate is straight-sided and its width decreases towards the non-frame end, where the two sides are held together by a copper-alloy rivet. At the frame end, the now-missing pin would have been attached via a central slit in the plate.
Length: 45.6mm; width: 15.6mm; thickness: 3.5mm. Weight: 5.18g.
Similar buckles were found at Meols, Merseyside, where they were dated to the late 14th century (Egan, in Griffiths et al. 2007: 98/Pl. 16, cf nos. 682 and 704).
