A cast lead alloy spindle whorl dating to the Medieval period, (AD1066-1500). The object is circular in plan and biconical with a large central circular perforation. The internal perforation measures 8.88mm in diameter. One face of the object is decorated with moulded lines which radiate out from the perforation. Between each line is a single pellet. A circle of pellets border the rim of the perforation. On the opposite face one edge of the perforation has been damaged, possibly due to the plough. This face is decorated with moulded ridges in a star pattern between the angles of which are pellets. It has a dark white patina.
Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period c.1100-1500.
