Post Medieval lead alloy cloth seal, of two disc type, from Augsburg. One disc survives with the integral central rivet which previously held the two together. The edge is broken and torn at one point where the connecting strip has broken away along with the second, ring shaped, disc, the damage is the same patina as the rest of the fragment. The front has a raised design of a large letter A within a circular border of oval pellets alternating between ovals going around the circle and ones at right angles. On the back the rivet is stamped with part of the design of a pinecone, the rest was lost on the other disc. It is now 21.4mm by 20.0mm, 3.1mm thick and it weighs 4.98 grams.
The 'A' and pinecone design indicates it originates from Augsburg, Germany; the pinecone is the heraldic badge of the city (Egan 2004, 106). Egan provides parallels (ibid.) nos. 308-10, suggesting such seals were attached to fustians and dated to the 16th or 17th century.
