COIN

Unique ID: GLO-3118C0

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An early medieval silver sceat of Secondary phase Series E (uncertain subclass); mint: probably Netherlands although possibly England; date: c. AD 720-c.760 (possibly as late as c.AD800).

The obverse of the coin is also found on two coins listed by Metcalf and Op den Velde (2009) under 'imitations' (sub-variety k), one from Domburg, Zeeland (no. 2309), the other Barrington, Cambs (no. 2310). The reverse appears to copy the coins of Tertiary Phase Variety E2, albeit in mirror image suggesting that the coin may come late in the sequence which Metcalf and Op den Velde suggest may be as late as c.AD800.

Obverse: Quilled crescent enclosing two bars and two pellets

Reverse: Square standard with beaded border, annulet at centre surrounded by two alternating angles and bars, crescents on the outside of the long edges of the standard.
