Fragment of an Early Medieval, cast copper alloy strap end of Thomas' Class A Type 2 'enamelled' variety. The strapend is made from thin sheet metal and the decoration consists of longitudinal rows of crescentic incisions, inlaid with what appears to be white enamel. The edges were marked by an inlaid line. Both the terminal and split end are missing, the upper end being marked by a transverse step, the back of the strap end is plain. Condition fair, Length 28.8mm, Width 14.2mm, Thickness 1.1mm, Mass 1.59g.
Enamelled strap ends were discussed by Thomas and this find fits into his Class A Type 4. The enamel is usually employed in rectangular champleve panels or, as here, inlaid into stamped or incised recesses. Strap ends of this type were seen as being a southern type and this find from north of the Humber is an interesting extension to the distribution.
