An incomplete copper alloy dragonesque brooch of Roman date. The brooch is curvilinear in form resulting in a roughly S-shaped piece which is decorated on the upper surface. The decoration consists of four central recessed panels in grid form, two of which retain blue enamel. Two parallel curved triangular cells are present to either side of the grid; one of each also contains blue enamel. Those panels which contain enamel alternate between the upper and lower rows. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
The metal has a mid green patina and is worn. The brooch is 25mm long, 11.4mm wide, 4.2mm thick and weighs 3.7g.
A similar example can be seen in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210, no.1655 and is dated to the 2nd century AD.
