An incomplete Late Medieval (1350 - 1450) copper-alloy composite strap-end. The strap end consists of an integral trapezoidal box-chape (24.95x24.21mm) with a fragment of probable "lyre-shaped" openwork frame at the base of the box, riveted at the reverse to a thin copper alloy sheet. The surface of the strap end is decorated with black letter inscription, while the reverse is plain. The black letter comprises perhaps three letters, although they are not discernable. Often such inscriptions have religious connoitations.
Four rivets remain intact at the four corners of this square border, with the two at the open end showing signs of iron corrosion. Below the border is a horizontal groove running the length of the box frame, beyond which two incomplete arms of the openwork frame extend from the outer edges and are each decorated with a circular punch mark. The strap end measures 28.44mm in length, 25.3mm in width, is 6.88mm thick and weighs 12.45g
