A lion-head spout from a Roman samian mortarium. The head is depicted in three dimension, and has a mane of wavey locks of hair on the top and sides. The eyes are pointed oval and the mouth is open and hollow. The snout is damaged.
Lion-head spouts are a common feature of Form 45 mortaria (see Webster 1996: 55-56). According to Webster, "This type first appears in the late 2nd century (c. AD 170 or later). East Gaulish examples were imported up to the mid 3rd century" (p. 56). Several examples are recorded on the PAS database; LIN-118284, BH-12D2A1, LON-187598, LON-02FE97.
