A complete copper-alloy double sided coin weight of Post-Medieval date.
It is square in form and trapezoidal in section. The obverse depicts a shield of British arms on a rose, all within a beaded circle. The reverse depicts a crown beneath which is the value XXXIII/s for 33 shillings, counterstruck with a crowned letter I for James, all within a beaded circular border.
This coin weight measures 20.73mm in length, 20.49mm in width, 4.20mm in thickness, 12.28g in weight (189.51 grains).
This is a British coin weight for a rose ryal of James I, valued at 33 shillings as indicted on the weight itself. It falls below the standard weight of 213.25 grains for this coin (Withers and Withers, 1995, p. 40, 68). Withers and Withers (1995, p. 40) note that square weights bearing the value XXXIII /s were issued on or after 1612, the crowned I indicating usage during the reign of James I, suggesting a date range for the current object of c.1612-1625 AD.
