Post-medieval cast copper-alloy eagle figurine, perhaps from the lid of a vessel. Filed to remove casting seam around sides of head and wings (wingspan of 41mm), feathers indicated by fine engraved lines and modelling. The bird has a flat base rather than feet, with an integral rivet.
Cast birds similar to the example noted here turn up on a fairly regular basis. Although they have often been given a Romano-British date, the large number of almost identical figurines now known as a result of metal-detecting may indicate a later date of manufacture for these objects, perhaps during the 18th century.
Cf. An example from Wickhambrook, Suffolk (NMS832). A similar example, dated to the Roman period, can be seen in Green (1976), 179 and Plate VIII, k. This example is riveted to a 'disc', perhaps a vessel lid.
