MOUNT

Unique ID: LVPL-CAF105

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper alloy zoomorphic mount in the form of a sitting bird. The bird is shown in three-dimension and is naturalistic. The body is plano-convex in cross-section and tapers to the tail which terminates with a rounded point. The wings are folded to the body and are represented with a shallow curved groove on each side of the object defining the upper edge of the wings. Within the groove are a series of small punched triangles giving texture to the wings and representing feathers. The neck is long and measures 2.74mm in width and 3.38mm thick. The head is narrow, and of equal width to the neck. Both the head and neck are undecorated. Either side of the head is a large circular depression measuring 1.79mm in diameter and 0.11mm in depth. Each depression is empty however would have contained a stone, glass or enamel for the eyes. The beak is long and hooked. It measures 2.07mm in width and is 4.14mm long. The long curved beak indicates it may be a type of wading bird.

The base of the object is undecorated. On the underside of the body of the bird is a rectangular slot measuring 6.79mm in length, 3.94mm in width and 1.15mm in depth. The front end of the slot (towards the front of the bird) is slightly curved. Either side of the slot is a semi-circular projection both of which are worn and perforated. The perforation has an internal diameter of 2.06mm. The projection to the bird's left is smaller and more worn than that of the bird's right.

The object is almost complete and has a smooth light green patina. It is in very good condition.

Notes:

It is difficult to be certain regarding what the original function of the object was. The bird probably attached to a larger object such as a vessel with the slot and may have been riveted on using the perforated projections. Alternatively the perforated projections may have held a hinge bar allowing the object to move.

Bird mounts are known from a variety of objects in Roman Britain, most commonly as vessel mounts. Many similar mounts are recorded on the PAS database, such as NCL-4ABA17, LIN-532BC2, NLM-AC0EA8, YORYM-C8C5F5 (used as a pin), NMS-A116B8 (finial, possibly a cult object), LIN-BE4186 (with open rectangular shank beneath).
