A copper alloy Roman nummus of Magnentius, dating to the period AD 352-353 (Reece Period 18). SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES reverse type depicting a Chi-Rho. Uncertain mint.
his coin is a 'minim'. It has a very small flan and only the top of the Chi and the top right of the Rho are visible. It has probably been cut down, either from an officially issued coin or a contemporary copy. Quite significant numbers of cut-down nummi of Magnentius are found in Britain (eg. S Moorhead, A History of Roman Coinage in Britain, p. 193, Fig. 50; G Boon, 'Counterfeit coins in Roman Britain', in Casey and Reece, Coins and the Archaeologist, plate VIII, nos. 148-9). Later coins are also sometimes cut down, so it is quite possible that the practice continued to end of the Fourth Century (see Boon, ibid, p. 145) and the British Museum has acquired a number from a site in Lincolnshire.
