<full>Cast copper&#45;alloy  belt plate. Open&#45;work and enamelled decoration. Sub&#45;rectangular, with rounded ends. Rounded knop in the centre of each rounded end, with trace of loop either side of each knop (all broken). Rectangular panel on either side, peltiform ends,  neither of which is complete, on inside of each rounded end. Fungiform stud at either end of reverse surface. Inlaid enamel decoration as  follows;  black and yellow millefiore enamel within the rectangular panels, red enamel within the rounded ends with traces of black dots, turquoise within the peltiform ends  and blue enamel within the rounded knops. Much of the red enamel is missing; and a section of comparable size from each of the rectangular panels is also missing. Reverse surfaces hollow. L: 83 W: 36 T: 3   Similar examples are known from across the Empire from Britain, along the Rhine and Danube to Syria (Dura). Four plates from South Shields were chained together on a broad leather belt (Allason&#45;Jones &amp; Miket 1984, 94&#45;6).</full>
