A copper alloy zoomorphic mount of probable Post Medieval date, about AD 1700 - 1800. It is in the form of a goat or ram's head, facing forwards. It has deeply knurled horns and long hair is depicted on the brow. There are moulded pointed ears, lentoid eyes and prominent ridges above them, and a narrow muzzle with concave cheeks. Projecting from the top of the head is a square sectioned, forward curving hook or spiral terminal, like the head of a crozier. The end of the hook is circular in plan. The reverse of the mount is hollow and filemarks are visible on the edges of the base. Projecting from the upper centre of the reverse (slightly to the left) is a circular sectioned shank, perhaps incomplete. The metal has a smooth dark green patina. The mount is 47.7mm tall, 29.83mm wide and 25.16mm thick. 25.27g.
The style does not suggest a Roman date (Worrell, pers.comm.). The square hook is particularly uncharacteristic. It is probably 18th century.
