A copper alloy Roman brooch of the bow and fantail type dating from AD 50 - 150. It could also be categorised as a trumpet derivative brooch. The brooch has rectangular wings decorated with two vertical grooves separated by a band of ropework. The wings hide a tubular housing for the copper alloy axis bar and copper alloy hinged pin. Only part of the pin survives. There is the remains of an integral head loop with a band of ropework beneath it. The top of the bow is decorated with a downward pointing triangle containing three triangular cells of decayed ?red enamel and a central triangular cell of ?white enamel. There there is a band of moulding; three transverse collars. The bow then flares into a circular setting on the front of the bow which is pierced, the setting being in the centre of a rounded lozenge shaped frame. The remains of a copper alloy setting survives in the recess and with a copper alloy rivet through the bow. Below is another triple collar and the the bow forms the triangular fantail. There is a recessed area in the shape of a triangle. This is filled with ?red enamel except for a horseshoe shape of blue enamel. Most of the catchplate survives. The metal work has a deep green patina and is in good condition. The breaks are patinated. Compare LIN-678D07 and YORYM-96E435, but particularly SWYOR-2815A8 and SWYOR-5566F0. The brooch is 47.73mm long, 16.89mm wide, 16.76mm thick. 11.73g.
