POINT

Unique ID: DENO-8C977B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A knapped flint late Upper Palaeolithic, Late Glacial shouldered point, dating from c.11,000 - c. 8,300 BC. The point is formed from an elongated blade which has two main longitudinal ridges on the dorsal face from previous blade removal from the same core. There is some additional ridging at the tip of the blade where the point has been formed; the very tip of the point has been broken and is missing.

There is short scaled semi-abrupt-low angle retouch along one edge of the pointed tip which extends from the tip downwards for a length of c.20mm. The overall length of the point is 68.7mm. The implement has additional retouch forming the 'shoulder' on the same side as the blade retouch but at the opposite end from the tip with an area of unretouched edge separating the two retouched sections. This shouldered retouch is of different character to the tip retouch being more irregular and haphazardly scaled in appearance overall but with the retouch also being short and scaled but in this instance abrupt in terms of the edge profile. This second area of retouch extends for a length of c.28mm.

The blade is curved longitudinally from tip to butt as can been seen in the attached images.

The flint is of a semi-opaque warm orange/amber brown colour with occasional streaks of dark reddish-brown staining probably due to iron content.
