A complete post-Medieval thick sheet copper-alloy furniture fitting in the form of an escutcheon for a drop-handle (c. 1600-c. 1700).

This fitting is sub-triangular in plan and is curved, as viewed from above. The edges are curvilinear with a heart-shaped terminal at each end, a central lobe at the top and a smaller central pierced lobe at the bottom. It has incised and possibly stamped decoration at the front. The decoration consists of a central flower head with six petals formed by arcs with a ring in each arc. Close to the centre of the flower head is a ring-and-dot motif. Emanating from each side of the flower head are two curving lines representing a stem for a tri-lobed 'bud' situated within the heart-shaped terminal. Each terminal is pierced, one piercing is rectangular and the other is irregular. The pierced hole in the bottom lobe is countersunk. The rear face is plain.

The fitting has a dark green patina with small areas of corrosion at the front and rear. It is unclear whether the curvature is deliberate or is due to damage whilst in the ploughsoil.

Height: 42.5mm; width: 84.6mm; thickness: 1.4mm. Weight: 16.77g.
