A cast lead alloy token or tally dated (AD) 1690. The token is bifacial with the obverse depicting an animal, possibly a cow, standing left with head facing and tail upright. The body of the animal has cross-hatched patterning. There is an equal-armed cross above the animal's head and a pellet to its left. The design is contained within a neat circular border. The reverse of the token is divided into three sections, all contained within a plain circumferential border. A panel of cross-hatching sits above the initials T (pellet) C, which in turn sits above the date 1690. The initials probably represent the owner of the token, rather than the maker.
This is the third token of the hatched cow design from the same area. Token ESS-6AE150 has the initials R W and the date 1693, and token SUSS-5C4021 has the initials K (?) and the date 1692. Both were found less than three kilometers (two miles) from this example. While the initials and dates on all three tokens differ, the hatched cow design indicates a common and local theme. The initials may represent local landowners and the image of a (probable) cow may be a reference to cattle farming. Further research is underway.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
