An iron key (locking) of Medieval or Post Medieval date. It fits into Type 7 of the Goodall Classification used at Winchester and Salisbury (Salisbury Medieval Catalogue Volume 4), being a key with an asymmetrical bit and shaft projecting beyond the bit. These and Type 8 keys probably date from 1150 through to 1700. The style of the bow (with a bifid projection into the D shaped bow at the top of the shaft) suggests a 15th or 16th century date or later similar to examples in Bailey (2002). The stem is solid and the rectangular bit has a full depth T shaped cleft in the side furthest from the stem, and a small cleft at the outer edge of the leading side. Compare CAM-D56812.
The key is 164mm long, 55mm wide and 11.2mm thick. 99g.
