A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy spherical animal 'crotal' bell (1600-1800).
The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top is 8.4mm high, 13.0mm wide and 5.2mm thick and has a circular perforation.
The upper and lower hemispheres are divided equally by a horizontal circumferential joining rib. At either side of the suspension loop, about half way down the side of the upper hemisphere, is a small circular sound hole, one is larger than the other. In the lower hemisphere there are two larger sound holes integral with a sound slit. The corroded iron sound 'pea' moves freely within the bell. The upper hemisphere has a 'sunburst' design and the lower hemisphere has a 'fish-scale' design. At either side of the slit there is a maker's mark in the form of a heart.
The outer surface is coarse and pale green with small patches of a darker green patina. There are also buff deposits and iron staining on the outer surface. Due to corrosion and possibly wear, the decoration is barely visible.
