A copper-alloy double-loop buckle with separate axis bar, dating from the post-Medieval period.
The frame is roughly rectangular, curving downwards either side of the central axis bar. This axis bar, which is of iron, sits within two opposing holes in the frame. A copper-alloy tongue and central pin have been sleeved over the bar. The maker's mark, 'SG' or 'SC', has been stamped on the underside of the tongue. Each of the two horizontal sides of the frame is largely occupied by an elliptical moulding with recessed upper surface. A series of transverse grooves has been used to create a ropework effect on each of the two vertical sides of the frame, with a number of pointed projections outside this.
Length: 43.7mm; width: 31mm; thickness: 4.5mm. Weight: 13.5g.
Similar buckles are illustrated by Whitehead, who suggests they date from the late 17th to early 18th centuries (1996: 96 - 101).
