A Medieval silver coin; a half penny of Edward I (1272 - 1307), probably a variety of Class 8 (Withers' type 8), probably dating from AD 1294 - 1299, but with an obverse legend not listed in Withers (EDWA R ANGL DNS HYB) and a reverse barred N on the obverse. This legend is listed for Type 6 coins (6b), but the crown is clearly the shape found on class 7 and 8 coins. The coin has a small part of the flan missing from 8-9 o'clock on the obverse, and is bent. It has a diameter of 14.76mm diameter, 0.74mm thick. 0.59g.
Compare Withers (2005) Farthings and Halfpennies: Edward I and II, page 48, and North number 1049.
Rod Blunt comments that: "Withers (Farthings and Halfpennies - Edward I and II) does not list this variety with obverse legend beginning 'EDWA R', but it is listed in the present writer's article Early Edwardian Halfpennies (1279-1344). The reverse-barred 'N' in ANGL is not however mentioned, but has been noted for inclusion when the article is next updated. The first 'N' of LONDON on the reverse is barred normally, but the second 'N' of LONDON and the 'N' of DNS are uncertain due to the missing piece of the flan."
