Copper alloy brooch. Cast crossbow brooch, Mackreth type CR 3.1b, cf. Keller Type 1 dated to 290-310 in Bavaria. Cast hinged bow brooch with two integrally cast onion shaped knops at the ends of its arms and a larger knop on top of the wings which retain the stub of a hinged pin in a closed cylinder with rust staining around it. These meet the bow at mouldings which go all around and with additional stop mouldings to the front only for the side arms. The bow itself is of facetted sub-rectangular section and bears relicts of paired incised lines down its centre. The curved part of the bow ends on a plain collar moulding. The foot is plain and flat in front but curved behind where it forms a chunky catch plate, with a basal aperture. This brooch type is strongly linked to a later Roman military and official presence. This unusually complete example is considered a find of note on account of the Humber region's strategic role in the defence of the later Roman empire. Suggested date: Late Roman, 290-380.
Length: 61.6mm, Width: 40mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 6.0mm, Weight: 34.06gms.
