A post-Medieval cast copper-decorative hinge element from either a box or possibly a book fitting (c. 1500-c. 1700).
The object is flat and sub-rectangular in cross-section with bevelled edges at the front. One end terminates with a fleur-de-lis which has a countersunk hole for attachment. The rivet for this hole is missing. Beyond this is heart-shaped openwork, within which is a rounded moulding with a countersunk hole for a second rivet. This moulding and hole are incomplete due to a break. Beyond the second rivet hole there is a narrowed protrusion which would have fitted into the centre of a second hinged element. The protrusion is thickened and rounded and accommodates the remains of an iron axis bar.
The object is drab green with patches of black lacquer at the front. File marks can just be seen at the front. There is iron staining around the lug for the second rivet.
Length: 24.1mm; width: 11.8mm; thickness: 3.6mm. Weight: 1.09g.
