Medieval honestone of Norwegian Ragstone. The cross-section is sub-rectangular with the narrow sides quite flat but the two broad faces irregularly convex. Close to the slightly damaged narrower end an encircling V-sectioned groove with overlapping ends was presumably to take a suspension cord (a drilled perforation is the more normal method). Below the groove the sides are straight and then gently diverge before a rounded lower end. Length 84mm. Width 21.5 - 28mm. Thickness 10.5 - 14.5mm. Weight 55.98g. Norwegian Ragstone was imported in quantity before the Conquest (Moore, D.T. and Ellis, S.E. in Rogerson and Dallas 1984, 107-11) and in Norfolk remained "the preferred material for hones during the late medieval period" (Mills, J.M. with Moore, D. in Shepherd Popescu 2009, 709).
