Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age olive/grey flint plano convex knife, knapped on a secondary flake. Due to the way in which it has been knapped, the ventral is convex & the dorsal flat with a roughly central patch of retained cortex. There is extensive retouch to both faces. On the dorsal face the first phase is invasive, scaled, and low angle. The second dorsal phase is long, sub parallel, and low angle. There is also subsequent retouch to keep the edge sharp but this is more variable in character. The first phase of retouch on the ventral face is covering, scaled, stepped, parallel, and low angle. The mixed style of this first phase is due to the large milky white inclusion on the ventral. The first 20mm or so from the distal are the expected thickness. A deliberate attempt has been made to not only retain the different coloured flint, but apparently, also to emphasise it. The second ventral phase is long, sub parallel, and low angle. As with the dorsal side, there is also subsequent retouch to keep the edge sharp and this is also variable in character. The knife would have probably been hafted at the proximal end, and the retouch there (scaled, crossed semi-abrupt) supports this idea. The lack of close parallels may be due to the comparative rarity of these artefacts, or possibly more likely, due to regional differences in lithic culture. Dates from between c2100 and c1600 BC.
Length 62mm, width 35mm, thickness 11mm, and mass 24.70g.
