A Medieval copper-alloy bar mount with pendent loop.

The object comprises two joined elements. At the top, there is a vertically aligned bar with projecting, rearward loop at its base. A separately cast frame is suspended from this loop. The bar is of 'D-shaped' section and contains two in situ copper-alloy rivets. The first rivet is located at the top; the second is at the base and is joined to a rectangular 'stop' at the distal end of the loop. The frame is circular, with surfaces that slope downwards and outwards. Two vertical arms project upwards from the top of the frame, their upper ends joined by an axis bar, which sits within the loop of the bar mount.

Length: 24.4mm; width: 11.4mm; thickness: 5.8mm; weight: 1.6g.

Similar fittings were found in excavations in London, in layers dating from late 13th to 14th centuries (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 221/fig. 138, cf. nos. 1189 - 1193). They were probably attached to belts, allowing articles to be suspended from them.
