{"recordID":"62136","finds":[{"created2":"2004 03 10","description":"Cast copper alloy mount in the form a small figurine of a banqueter of Roman date, probably from the 1st century AD. The figure is eroded with the original surface now missing. The figurine depicts a reclining banqueter resting on the left elbow. The figure appears to be naked above the waist. The lower part of the body and legs are covered with draperies, the folds of which are indicated by cast and recessed lines on the front and rear. The hand is visible against the base of drape. The rear of the figure may have further drapery over the left shoulder. No detail of the face or the rest of figure survive. The mount is curved as if fitted on a curved object. The figure has lost the projecting right hand.","notes":"The figurine can be closely paralleled with a figurine excavated at Usk (Webster 1995, pp 47-49) and recovered from a pre-Flavian context. Webster argues that the artistic treatment of the figure is deliberately archaic and inspired by Greek two-dimensional vessel mounts and believes the Usk figurine stood, with other figures, on the rim of a vessel associated with the serving of wine. Similar figures have been found in Colchester (BM accession No 70.4-2.17), Richborough (Bushe-Fox 1949, pp 138) and Verulamium.
