Treasure case 2014 T372: Disclaimed and returned to finder

Description: Late Medieval - early Post medieval silver mount. The mount has an openwork lozenge-shaped frame which is trapezoid in section. From the centre of each side of the frame an arrow or leaf shape projects outwards, these are thinner than the main frame. The shapes have a raised stem ending in a triangular terminal the inner corners of which extend into curls curving inwards to flank the stem. The rounded outer points of the triangular terminals are recessed. There is a single integral rivet projecting from the back of the frame, near one of the acute points; a rough area of the other acute point may indicate where a second rivet was originally sited or was meant to be cast. The end of remaining the rivet is burred over. The back has multiple parallel file marks.

Dimensions: It is 15.3mm long, 13.7mm wide 2.2mm thick excluding the rivet, 3.9mm including, and weighs 1.62 grams.

Discussion: Similar, although more elaborate, small silver mounts, each unique in form but similar in size and attachment and manufacturing methods, have been recorded through the Treasure process, for example: 2012 T387 (GLO-F9944) and 2011 T123 (IOW-4E39B0). They are dated to the fifteenth to early sixteenth century.

Notes:

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
