{"recordID":"61943","finds":[{"created2":"2004 03 09","description":"Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped type and dating to the 1st to 2nd century AD. The brooch employed a hinge mechanism with tubular wings enclosing a copper alloy axis bar. The wings have not been cast at a right angle to the bow, and also slope towards the rear of the head. The wings are decorated with vertical mouldings. The top of the head has a simple chain loop, which is now broken. The upper bow is of sub-triangular section, and was decorated with short irregular incised lines. The button is unusual and is composed of a flat oval panel with an incised border defining a central chevron. The chevron panel contains four recessed U-shaped cells around a central circular cell, forming a floral motif. The recessed cells are likely to have contained enamel. The lower bow is decorated with short incised lines to the moulded foot. The catch-plate arcs from the rear of the button, and the rear of the catch is decorated with an incised zigzag line. Traces of silvering or tinning survive on some of the surface.","notes":"The brooch can be best paralleled with Hattatt\u2019s (1987) Nos. 918-9, Hull\u2019s Type 122. The decoration on the button of this example is slightly different with the arrangement of the U-shaped cells within a chevron as apposed to two triangular cells in a lozenge. Other features on the brooch are similar.","old_findID":"NMGW-DE11F3","id":"61943","objecttype":"Bow brooch","classification":"T-Shaped","subclass":null,"reuse":null,"created":"2004-03-09 15:25:13","broadperiod":"ROMAN","updated":"2011-02-24 12:19:17","treasureID":null,"secwfstage":"4","secuid":"001404DE1D9016AE","findofnote":null,"objecttypecert":"0","datefound1":"2003-09-01","datefound2":"2004-02-01","createdBy":"47","curr_loc":null,"inscription":null,"reason":null,"subsequentAction":"Returned to finder"}],"record":[{"id":"61943","old_findID":"NMGW-DE11F3","uniqueID":"001404DE1D9016AE","objecttype":"Bow brooch","classification":"T-Shaped","subclass":null,"length":"51.1","height":null,"width":"20.2","thickness":"14.8","diameter":null,"quantity":"1","other_ref":"NMGWPA 2004.36.2","treasureID":null,"broadperiod":"ROMAN","numdate1":"50","numdate2":"200","description":"Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped type and dating to the 1st to 2nd century AD.
