An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.a. Plate 46, of Roman dating (AD 80 to AD 120).
Approximately 50% of the brooch is present, consisting of the bow, wings, and a partial catchplate.
The bow is straight, but tapers to a point. It has a D shaped cross section. The head is angular. On the back of the head, the remnants of a semi circular groove is present, this would have originally contained the spring. Semi circular wings extend from either side of the head. A ridge is present at the junction between the bow and the wings. The reverse of the brooch is plain and undecorated. The remains of a vertical catch plate are present towards the foot of bow.
The brooch measures 50.9 mm in length, 21.2 mm wide and 11.0 mm thick. It weighs 12.4 g.
The brooch is a dark to mid green colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of the majority of surface detail.
