Green volcanic Tuff polished axehead. Elongated oval axehead of Group 6, from the Langdale Pikes, Cumbria. Of oval section with an aris where the sides meet, and achieving its maximum width at the ends of a crescentic cutting edge. About three chips on either side may represent damage in antiquity, and may have been exploited to assist the securing of hafting. Several chips occur along the cutting edge, the largest of which has been lightly smoothed indicating that this damage was incurred during the working life of the axe. Further small ancient chips appear towards the butt. The tip of the butt is lost at a recent break. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-2200 BC.
