An incomplete copper-alloy folding balance of Medieval date. Only the bar and the majority of one arm survive, the remainder of the object is missing due to old breaks, now worn.
Consisting of an oval bar with a rectangular slot at each end. In one end is the remains of a separately cast copper-alloy arm. This is flat and rectangular at the attachment but expands to be cylindrical in form before tapering towards its now missing terminal end. This arm is held in place by a separate circular rivet with a flattened round head.
This balance measures 33.02mm in length (bar), 32.64mm in length (arm), 5.81mm in width (bar), 4.12mm in width (bar), 5.23mm in thickness (bar), 3.98mm in thickness (arm), 5.39g in weight.
There is a similar example from London (Egan, 1998, p. 327, no. 1055) and recorded on the PAS database (NLM-6A2893), (ESS-BC4661), (CORN-167758), (SF-CE9497).
