A complete copper alloy domed / beehive thimble of Late Medieval dating (c. AD 1400 to c. AD 1550) The thimble is of the beehive or domed shape, and is sub circular in shape. A series of circular holes or indentations have been punched around the sides in horizontal and vertical lines. The indentations are in a circular pattern on the domed top. Two horizontal grooves are present as decoration just above the base of the thimble. The thimble measures 15.92 mm tall, 17.67 mm wide ay the bottom and 15.54 mm wide at the top. The walls of the thimble are 1.10 mm thick. It weighs 3.3 g. The thimble is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. This style of thimble is commonly known as a beehive thimble, and has been dated to the Late Medieval period (AD 1400 to AD 1550) Holmes (1988). Holmes suggests that this style is consistent with being a 'heavy duty' type. Reference: Holmes, E.F. (1988) Sewing Thimbles. Finds Research Group Datasheet 9.
