A post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount in the shape of an acorn. The front is slightly convex and the back concave. There are the stubs of two integral circular sectioned rivet spikes on the back, one near either end, both off centre. Most of the spikes are lost to patinated breaks but enough remains of one to see it was bent downwards 90 degrees. The acorn has an elongated oval shape with a thinner 'nut', a raised plain collar across the middle and a broader cup below decorated with raised lozenges in a grid. At the centre of the lower point of the cup is the stub of a stem, lost to a worn break. There is also a break at the top of the nut where there was probably a projecting knop.
The object is 31.2mm long by 17.5mm wide, 2.7mm thick excluding the rivets, 5.2mm including. It weighs 3.65 grams.
A similar mount is illustrated by Read (2001:37), no.332 which he dates to the 17th century. See NMGW-262F22 and SOM-4FE140 for similar examples on our database.
