An incomplete lead or lead alloy toy petronel (gun), with an iron core, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1600 to AD 1800).
The petronel consists of a cylindral barrel, the butt, trigger and trigger guard. The butt (handle) has been decorated with a lozenge lattice pattern with pellets between. Scroll decoration is present beneath the open powder pan. Iron corrosion products are present around the powder pan and trigger guard area, obscuring those details.
It measures 80.0 mm in length, 16.6 mm wide and 7.6 mm thick. It weighs 31.1 g.
The toy petronel is a off white colour, with an even surface patina.
The form resembles that of toy petronels or cavalry pistols reported from London, where a 17th-century date is suggested (Forsyth and Egan 2005, page 97, no. 1.39). Several similar toy petronels have been recorded on the PAS database, including: NMS-657775; KENT-761751 and SUSS-41C181.
