An incomplete copper alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date. The head is circular with an integral lug projecting from the reverse which accommodates an almost complete and corroded pin mechanism. Four turns of the spring remain around an axis bar; one end of which would have formed the pin though now terminates in a worn break. The axis bar curves round to form an articulated attachment loop clasped by a rectangular collar which is decorated on the front with three lozenge shaped cells.

The centre of the head extends into a D-sectioned bow which tapers in circumference to a worn break. Midway along the length of the bow is an elaborate, semi-circular acanthus moulding flanked by double semi-circular collars.

The head of the brooch is decorated with two lozenge shaped cells oriented along the longitudinal axis over a raised central spine and flanked by two outward facing crescentic panels. The lozenge panels are filled with yellow enamel while the crescents retain blue enamel. Any further decoration has been rendered indeterminable by the advanced wear to the lower bow.

The metal has a mid brown patina and is worn. The brooch is 46.6mm long, 17.1mm wide, 8.1mm thick and weighs 17.4g.

A similar example is illustrated in Hattatt, p.327, fig.186, no.1528 and is dated to circa 75 - 175 AD.
