SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: IOW-EA34E7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete post-Medieval silver and glass rebus seal matrix, probably from a fob seal (c. 1800-c. 1900).

The handle or suspension loop is missing due to a break.

The frame of this seal matrix is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. On the upper surface there is a circular break where the handle was situated. The lower edge is denticulated. The frame holds a pale off-white glass intaglio bearing five incised elements forming a pun:

Eye/draped figure, statue of Hope, standing, holding an anchor in left hand and right arm raised/yew tree/are/water well (I hope you are well).

Length: 13.4mm; width: 10.1mm; thickness: 2.9mm. Weight: 1.07g.

It is also possible that the object might be the bezel of a finger-ring.
