Part of a Medieval copper-alloy mount, probably from a casket.
The largest component of the piece is a 'D-sectioned' bar with an upward curve. At one end of this bar there is a rounded plate with circular rivet hole; at the other end the bar flares into a damaged, flat-sectioned extension. A rivet with a flat, cross-shaped head has been attached just over halfway along the aforementioned bar, its shank contained within a circular rivet hole. Traces of gilding survive on the heavily corroded surfaces of the object.
Length: 50.3mm; width: 17.9mm; thickness/height: 10.1mm; weight: 7.06 g.
A similar mount, also with a separate rivet (with a clawed setting), was excavated at South Mimms castle (Kent et al. 2013)
