A complete lead bag seal of post-medieval date. The seal is of the two disc type joined by a central bar. One disc bears the indistinct merchant's/privy mark H or double L in curvilinear italic lettering. The reverse is inscribed in a crude hand with the numbers 483//18½ which are likely to represent the quality control officer who checked the goods prior to sealing and/or the quality/quantity of the goods.
The metal is a mid brown colour and is worn. The seal is 30.1mm in diameter, 4.3mm thick and weighs 18.7g.
Lead cloth seals were used between the 13th and 19th centuries as a means of identification and as a component of regulation and quality control.
