HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: NLM-858363

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Copper alloy suspension mount from a horse-harness pendant. Cast rectangular plate with projecting pair of hinge loops which retain the stub of a suspension loop of the pendant. The plate bears the relief motif of an Occitan or Toulouse Cross, as kindly identified by the finder, in a sunken circular field. This cross is equal-armed with a hollow centre and flaring arms (so a variant of a cross patty) with a pomette or pellet on each corner of the ends of its arms and at the mid points of the ends of the arms. There is also a field of cross-hatched grooves forming lozenges or checks in the space between the edge of the central round field and the outer edges of the pendant, and a drilled rivet hole of diameter 3.5mm in each of its corners. No colorant now remains. Height: 39.4mm, Width: 32.1mm, Thickness (plate): 2.3mm, Weight: 13.81g.

Square pendants from Norfolk, sometimes from more complex multiple arrangements, are dated to the later 12th and early 13th centuries (Ashley 2002, figs 8-9). The cross of Toulouse is associated with the South of France from the 12th century, with varied and debateable antecedents. The association of this object with another found nearby (NLM-859036) is possible.
