A fragment of a Medieval silver annular brooch (c. 1200-c. 1400). Treasure case no. 2014 T181.
This fragment, about 25% of the frame, is decorated at the front, flat and plain at the rear. The front is decorated with a series of continuous tooth-like indentations, possibly made by stamping. At each side of the decoration the edges are bevelled. One end has a small bar for the missing pin where the frame was constricted and the opposite end has a transverse break.
c. 39.0mm: (diameter of frame when complete); 4.82mm: (width of frame); 1.86mm (thickness of frame). Weight: 1.61g.
Notes:
The find contains a minimum of 10% silver and predates 1714. It thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of precious metal content and age.
