An incomplete post-Medieval Augsburg cast lead cloth seal (1500-1650).

A two disc seal.

This seal is of the type used on bales of fustian originating from the Bavarian city of Augsburg.

Disc 1. Capital A with a chevron bar and an annulet at each side and one below.

Disc 2. Missing.

The seal has a buff patina overall.

Diameter: 17.95mm; thickness: 4.22mm. Weight: 3.97g.

A very similar seal recorded in 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items at the British Museum' by Geoff Egan, (Egan 1994: 106, fig. 41, refs: 308-310) has been attributed to Augsburg in Germany. They are thought to be from mixed linen warp and cotton weft fabric which this city was famed for.
