Brooch
Unique ID: NMGW-A14F81
Object type certainty: Certain
Colchester brooch of Late Iron Age-early Roman date. The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin, spring and catch-plate. The spring has broken before the first coil, and extends from immediately beneath the forward-facing hook, which would have secured the external chord. The hook tapers to a point and sits on top of the head. The wings are flat and expand slightly towards their rounded ends. The bow is of trapezoidal section, and gradually tapers and arcs in a continuous curve to a plain foot. The front of the bow is decorated with three moulded ribs, the central one being wavy. It is possible that the bow carried punched decoration. The remnants of the catch-plate survive against the back of the bow and was 29mm long.
