BUCKLE

Unique ID: WAW-8A7C83

Object type certainty: Certain

The buckle frame is made from cast copper alloy. Only one loop and strap bar remains, the second loop and pin is missing. The remaining loop is a 'D' shape in plan. It is 25.6mm wide and 21.6mm long, from the strap bar to the apex ofthe loop.

The loop has a flat base and the upper face of the loop tapers towards the outer edge. The strap bar is narrowed, and is triangular in section. At the terminals of the strap bar there is a moulded linear ridge as decoration. The side of this decoration has broken edges where originally the second loop would have protruded. The breaks are not recent.

The surface of the frame is slightly pitted, and has a small trace of a shiny grey patina, otherwise the surface is a corroding mottled green colour. The grey patina could, therefore suggest silvering or tinning.

Egan and Pritchard have examples of similar shaped buckles which date between late 13th to 14th centuries. Their examples are smaller in overall size, and has slighly pointed oval frames instead of rounded loops. However, it is likely that this recorded buckle is contemporary in dating to these.
