An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative bow brooch, probably a double pierced lug bow brooch. Only the foot of the bow and catchplate survive, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The bow is triangular in section with flat back face and prominent mid-rib on the front face with flutes to either side. At the base of the bow is an integrally cast catchplate that is triangular in form with a folded outer edge and rectangular pin groove.Traces of possible openwork decoration are visible on the faces of the catchplate, but their precise form is uncertain due to post-depositional encrustation. The entire object has a worn and corroded dark brown patina and measures 26.49mm in length, 4.31mm in width, 2.69mm in thickness at bow (10.46mm in thickness/depth including catchplate) and 2.71g in weight.
This is an incomplete Roman Colchester derivative bow brooch, possibly a double pierced lug bow brooch. It is similar to examples from Hacheston (Blagg et al., 2004: no. 82) and is of 1st century AD date, c.43-100 AD.
