Fragment of a Late Saxon strap-end, comprising the rounded terminal, with a broad semi-circular break leaving a fragment missing on one side and a transverse break, worn and ancient. The item is decorated with elaborate symmetrical relief in the form of a broad segmented central stem flanked and interrupted by curled tendrils. The flat reverse is undecorated. Surviving length 28mm. Width 27mm.
This was originally thought to be a fragment of trefoil brooch, but there is no parallel in Maixner, and a good parallel comes from strap-end NMS-393CA2 (which ironically has itself been converted into a brooch). 10th century.
